The Effect of a Dementia Education Program on Dementia Perception and Knowledge of Elderly in Local Communities

Abstract
Objective : The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception and knowledge of dementia amongthe elderly and to compare the differences before and after a dementia education program.

Methods : The study was conducted wi t h 10 elderly individuals using the Senior Communi ty Center in ECi ty, Chungcheongbuk-do. A dementia education program was conducted, and after the program concluded,the scores from questionnaires taken before and after the education were compared to evaluate theeffectiveness of the program.

Results : Research results showed that the pre-test score for dementia perception was 3. 0 2, and the posttest score increased to an average of 3. 4 4 , showing an improvement of 0.42 points. For dementia knowledge,the pre test score was 3. 7 0 , and the post test score increased to 5.70, showing an improvement of 2p o i n t s .

Conclusion : The results of this study can be utilized as important evidence in developing effective dementiaeducation programs that can positively change the perception of dementia among the elderly. Thr ough this,it is expected that practical program development contributing to the improvement of the quality of life forelderly individuals wi t h dementia and their families wi l l be possible.
